After a few weeks in office for President Obama, he’s already met with families of the attacks on September 11 and the bombing of U.S.S. Cole. The President reassured the families of both attacks that those responsible for the actions that killed thousands of Americans will not go on unchecked. Obama was reported saying that justice will be handed down swiftly.
The meeting with newly elected President Barack Obama only lasted more than one hour according to White House Aides. The families of the fallen victims were only about 40 relatives of the attacks. The President explained to the families why he ordered the closing of Guantanamo Bay prison, the prison will be shut down within one year. He pledged to the families that the cases should be reviewed and handled in American and some foreign courts.
But not all of the family members have agreed with the Presidents order to close the Guantanamo Bay prison. For the most part the families of the victims have been reported of only giving the President their full support.
President Obama spoke briefly for close to 10 minutes before taking questions from the families. The meeting was closed to the media and the public, but it was said to have been very intense for both President Obama and the families. The families who brought pictures along with them of their loved ones talked to the President one on one.
President Obama and advisors are reviewing the cases closely, only to justify that the suspects of the prison are afforded American legal rights within the country. The reviewing of the cases will determine rather the terror suspects will be tried in American courts, or foreign courts for further prosecution of their actions.
Military leaders such as now retired Cmdr. Kirk Lippold can only disagree with President Obama to close the prison and try the suspects in American courts. Kirk Lippold was the commanding officer of the U.S.S. Cole when it was attacked back in 2000. The now retired commander represented the fallen sailors in the meeting the President. What was expected to be a negative meeting with the President turned out great according to the retired commander.
“It went far better than I had imagined” said Commander Lippold shortly after the meeting. The gain of support for the order to close the prison is just too far in between according to some. Fear is amounting that all of the American soldiers life’s that were lost from the Iraq and Afghanistan war will be in vein with known terrorist on American soil.
For the most part the polls say that most Americans support Barack Obama so far. With the Presidential order to close the prison many are speculating what path this will lead us down.
